Since early 2006, Bayer Business Services together with Bayer Technology Services has maintained an RFID test center in Leverkusen in which potential applications for this new technology can be investigated in detail under realistic conditions.
RFID stands for radio frequency identification, which is the use of radio waves to identify objects. This form of data transfer can be used to read or write to small radio chips, called transponders, RFID tags or SMART labels. The technology is already used in a number of areas (e.g. vehicle immobilizers, ski passes and access control systems).
Use with PCs
All subprocesses over the entire PC lifecycle – from delivery by the manufacturer to Bayer Business Services to subsequent customer-specific configuration, delivery to the end customer and return of the unit – are currently being studied to determine whether RFID technology can be used with PCs. Also under investigation is whether RFID can be used to optimize inventory and on-site support. One special aspect of this project is the metallic environment and its negative effects on data acquisition, which means that the choice of a suitable frequency, the right RFID tags and the optimal setup for the transmitters and receivers plays a crucial role.
