One database for all PUR products
Information about all products manufactured and sold by Bayer MaterialScience’s Polyurethanes (PUR) Business Unit is collected in a central database using Bayer Business Services’ proprietary technology named PUReDATA, which accelerates the exchange of information and is particularly user friendly thanks to its relational structure.

PUReDATA currently contains 8,500 datasets for 1,600 products. These include all relevant chemical-physical substance (CPS) information: ingredients, synonyms, production sites, safety data sheets and physical properties. 300 users in the fields of product development, product management, ecological assessment and in the Bayer MaterialScience Technical Service Center regularly access the data. “Numerous people rely on this system," says Klaus Konejung, PUReDATA project manager at Bayer MaterialScience.

Impressive price and performance

Prior to introducing the system from Bayer Business Services, the decision makers at the Bayer subgroup looked at a number of suppliers, but none of the offers was more convincing than the one from Bayer Business Services.

The price/performance ratio of PUReDATA was particularly impressive. The solution was implemented on the basis of IVY, the proprietary Java framework developed by Bayer Business Services. Because IVY is used in a number of other systems, development for the PUR Business Unit did not have to start from scratch, which gave Bayer Business Services an advantage with respect to price/performance ratio. The underlying database is Oracle 9i®, which manages a large number of records very rapidly and shines with short response times.

The relational structure of the database enabled BBS to implement an expanded search function in a second phase of development. The new search function allows search terms to be combined, and records can be found on the basis of ingredients, characteristic data and properties.

The database is also easy to use, with four hours of training enough to begin using PUReDATA.
