Chemical research would be impossible without it: The “Beilstein” is a central database for formulae, chemical reactions and substance properties. At the Bayer Group, more than six hundred researchers worldwide turn to the electronic archive for information. The question is how to obtain the Beilstein – as a leased solution directly from the provider or hosted by Bayer Business Services.
Bayer HealthCare wanted to know for sure and compared the two solutions in a comprehensive benchmarking study. The result, which may seem surprising at first sight, is that leasing direct from the provider is in no way superior to the hosted solution. “The benchmarking study showed clear advantages for the product from Bayer Business Services,” says Dr. Ulrich Müller, Scientific Information and Documentation at Bayer HealthCare. “Because we participated in the comparison, we know that it is an honest result relevant to our requirements.”
Integrated chemical information system
Bayer Business Services operates the Integrated Chemical Information System (ICS), which includes the Beilstein, on the Bayer intranet. Lanxess AG also uses the system. Registered users use a client program to access the data stored on a server. The data can also be obtained directly from the provider. The benchmarking study showed that Bayer Business Services can provide the data less expensively than the external provider. Furthermore, Bayer Business Services offers services for which Bayer HealthCare would otherwise have required additional resources.
Bayer Business Services
